Não sempre se traduz "até" como "until"

Há vários exercícios no Duolingo do tipo:

Suba até o terceiro andar
- "Go up to the third floor”

E algunos alunos perguntam “Por que não ‘until’?”

É verdade que “até” frequentemente se traduz como until (ou o mais informal 'til / till), mas não sempre.

O básico - until, 'til, till

Essas palavros têm o mesmo significado, 'til (inglês norte-americano) e till (inglês britânico) sendo um pouco mais informais. A diferença principal é que apenas until se pode usar no inicio da frase. Podem ser preposições ou conjunções.

Na grande maioria dos casos se usa referindo-se a tempo, seja até um ponto no tempo:

“We’re staying here until Friday”
- Nós vamos ficar aqui até sexta-feira

seja até que algo aconteça:

“I have to stay at work till I finish this”
- Eu tenho que ficar no trabalho até terminar isso

Às vezes se usa falando do continuar até um lugar específico, quando o significado é realmente até chegar a um lugar

“Keep walking until the church, then turn right”
- Continue andando até a igreja, depois vire à direita
= até chegar à igreja

Mas não usamos until / 'til / till no simples sentido de “para, a” um lugar. Usamos to ou às vezes as far as

"I need to drive to the gas station"
- Eu preciso dirigir até o posto de gasolina

"Can you take me as far as the village?"
- Você pode me levar até a aldeia?

Nota 1 - Up until

Às vezes usamos up until para enfatizar que uma situação durava até um certo ponto no passado, ou até agora

Up until that moment I'd had no idea who he was
- Até aquele momento eu não tinha ideia de quem ele era

The format stayed much the same up until the sixties
- O formato ficou praticamente o mesmo até os anos sessenta

Although this has been the case up until now, things looks about to change.
- Embora este tenha sido o caso até agora, as coisas parecem prestes a mudar.

Nota 2 - Ate que horas

São duas traduções aqui, uma com 'til / till ou to (mas não "until"), e uma com how long?

Até quando as lojas estão abertas
- "When are the shops open till/to"
- "How long are the shops open"

Continuando até um lugar

“She led the race until the final hurdle, where she was overtaken by her rival”
- Ela liderou a corrida até o último obstáculo, onde foi superada por seu rival
= até ela chegou ao último obstáculo

O uso mais frequente aqui é falando sobre como chegar a um lugar ou sobre o que acontecerá quando chegarmos lá.

“Stay on the bus until the big supermarket and get off at the next stop”
- Fique no ônibus até o grande supermercado e desça na próxima parada
= até chegar ao supermercado

“We stay on this road until Intersection 23, where we turn left”
- 'Nós ficamos nesta estrada até a intersecção 23, onde nos viramos à esquerda.

Do que eu possa ver, "para" e "até" são intercambáveis nessas frases. Usamos to, aqui, não until / 'til / till

Do you walk to work every day?
- Você anda para o trabalho todos os dias?

We usually walk home from here
- Nós geralmente caminhamos para casa daqui

She cycles to school every day
- Ela vai para a escola todos os dias

Go up to the fourth floor
- Vá até o quarto andar

as far as

Quando queremos enfatizar "até um lugar, mas não mais longe" , usamos as far as. Nestas frases também se pode usar to, mas não until / 'til / till

“You can see as far as the river from here”
- Você pode ver até o rio daqui

“They almost got as far as the border before they were caught”
- Eles quase chegaram até a fronteira antes de serem pegos

“Let’s walk as far as the village then find a pub where we can have lunch”
- Vamos andar até a vila e encontrar um pub onde possamos almoçar

“Our farm stretches as far as those hills over there”
- Nossa fazenda se estende até as colinas de lá

A expressão "até lá" se traduz como there ou over there. Note que não usamos o ou outra preposição com there.

We need to go over there”
- Nós precisamos ir até lá

“Can we walk there?
- Podemos andar até lá?

Também usamos a expressão "over to"

She walked over to her car
- Ela andou até o carro dela
