- Can you make it to the Christmas party?
A expressão “make it” significa conseguir fazer algo, conseguir ir a algum evento, conseguir chegar a um lugar a tempo, etc.
1) Poder ir a um evento
Esse é um uso falado, informal:
”Did you make it to Peter's wedding? I heard you were ill.”
- Você conseguiu ir ao casamento de Peter? Ouvi dizer que você estava doente.
”Can you make it to a little get-together on Friday?”
- Você pode chegar a uma pequena reunião na sexta-feira?
”Sorry, I can't make it to the meeting. I have to visit a client"
- Não posso ir à reunião. Tenho que visitar um cliente
Às vezes omitimos o “it to”:
”Sorry, I can't make the meeting. I have to visit a client”
E se alguém chegar a um lugar, quando ele pensou que não seria possível:
”Hey, great to see you. I’m so glad you could make it”
- Olá, prazer em vê-lo. Estou tão feliz que você pôde vir
”So you made it to Jenny’s party after all”
- Então você conseguiu chegar à festa de Jenny, afinal
2) Conseguir chegar a um lugar, especialmente quando isso for difícil
"All the runners made it to the end of the course"
- Todos os corredores chegaram ao final do percurso
”Do you think we can make it as far as that village?”
- Você acha que podemos chegar tão longe quanto aquela aldeia?
”Made it! I thought I’d never get here with all that traffic”
- Consegui! Achei que nunca chegaria aqui com todo aquele trânsito
Também usado metaforicamente:
”This year our team made it to the semi-finals”
- Este ano, nossa equipe conseguiu chegar às semifinais
made it to the top of his profession”
- Ele conseguiu chegar ao topo de sua profissão
3) Com “in time” etc
We just made it to the station in time"
- Nós apenas chegamos na estação a tempo
”Can you make it to my house before 9? That’s when we’re leaving”
- Você pode chegar à minha casa antes das 9? É quando estamos saindo
”Hurry, the bus is coming. If we run, we should make it”
- Depressa, o ônibus está chegando. Se corrermos, devemos conseguir (pegar-lo)
4) Ser bem sucedido
”Do you think I could make it as a singer?”
- Você acha que eu poderia me dar bem como cantora?
Frequentemente usado com “big”:
”She’s only eighteen, but she’s already made it big in the fashion world”
- Ela tem apenas dezoito anos, mas já se tornou grande no mundo da moda
5) Conseguir lidar com, sobrevivir uma experiência difícil
Frequentemente com “through”:
”The little boat made it through the storm”
- O pequeno barco conseguiu atravessar a tempestade
”It’s been touch and go, but he’s now made it through the worst of the illness”
- Tem sido difícil, mas agora ele superou o pior da doença
