Eu não entendo o que ele fala
- “I do not understand what he says”
Geralmente “falar” se traduz como “speak, talk”, enquanto “say” e “dizer”. Contudo, parece que em portugues brasileiro “falar” é frequentemente usado quando nos falamos (um exemplo) “say”.
Lembre que geralmente “speak” e “talk” são verbos intransitivos. Nós podemos:
”speak / talk to someone”
- falar com alguém
”speak / talk about something”
- falar sobre algo
”speak / talk clearly / fast”, etc
- falar claramente / rápido
Mas não geralmente podemos “speak something” (falar algo). Nos “say something” (dizer algo) ou “tell someone something" (dizer algo a alguém). Então, dizemos:
”What did you say?”
- O que você disse?
”I don’t know what she said”
- Nao sei o que ela disse
”I can’t understand what he’s saying”
- Eu não consigo entender o que ele está dizendo
etc.
Não:
”What did you speak?”
“I don’t know what she spoke”
“I can’t understand what he’s speaking”
etc.
As exceções:
O “speak” (mas não “talk”) pode ter um objeto direto ao falar de idiomas:
”She speaks French and two other languages”
- Ela fala francês e duas outras línguas
E com umas poucas expressões:
”to speak the truth”
- falar a verdade
”to speak your mind”
- falar o que pensa
E qual seria a diferença entre "speak the truth" e "tell the truth"?
